Description:

GEN. FRANZ HALDER'S OVERVIEW MAP OF THE DRIVE ON MOSCOW AT MZENSK, PHASE 3
An important hand-drawn situation map from the personal files of German Gen. FRANZ HALDER (1884–1972) documenting the late October, 1941 German drive towards Moscow as part of Operation Typhoon, and specifically showing the assault across the Susha River, through the village of Shalamovo and Mzensk itself, terminating at Wks. The map, 1p. 4to., was executed in pencil, with black india ink used to outline German forces and movements. The drawing is titled: 'Skizze 4 [Sketch]-Phase 3', drawn at a scale of 1:100,000 with a 0–5 km. bar at bottom right. It shows a detail of the German drive on Moscow following the capture of Orel which had fallen three weeks earlier. The positions and movements of the 18th Panzer Regiment and the 4th Panzer Division are clearly depicted, as are several other positions. A legend, again in black ink, is placed at lower right, identifying specific units involved in the attack. Shows a few folds overall, with a small loss to the right edge, otherwise in very good condition.
