GEN. FRANZ HALDER'S MAP OF THE EVACUATION OF CRIMEA
Important Russian campaign map from the personal files of German Gen. FRANZ HALDER (1884–1972), a printed map 10.5 x 16.5 in. drafted on a 1:1,000,000 scale, undated. The map is titled: 'Die Raumung der Krim - Lageentwicklung vom 8. bis 14.4.1944' ('The Evacuation of Crimea - Situation development from April 8 to April 14, 1944'. This startling map documents the Soviet offensive into the Crimean Peninsula and the evacuation of Axis forces, primarily German and Romanian, between April 8–14, 1944, during the Crimean Offensive by the 4th Ukrainian Front of the Red Army. The map depicts the Crimean Peninsula, surrounding waters, cities including Sevastopol (a defensive stronghold and the final evacuation point), Simferopol, Feodosiya, Kerch, Yalta, Balaklava, etc. Rapidly contracting German defensive lines are shown in two-day intervals, as are Soviet attacks and German and Romanian routes of retreat, with the Romanian 19th Division appearing prominently. Some of the principal forced engaged and shown include XXXXIX Geb. Korps (Mountain Corps), Gruppe Komrad and Gruppe Allmendinger, 50., 73., 98. Inf. Divisions, III. Rum. Korps, IV. Rum. Korps, 19th Romanian Division, Soviet 4th Ukrainian Front, 51st Army, 2nd Guards Army, and mechanized and infantry formations. Soviet attack begins from north of Perekop and from Kerch Peninsula, with a Soviet breakthrough across the peninsula, rapid advances toward Simferopol, Feodosiya, and Yevpatoriya. German and Romanian units rapidly retreated southward toward Sevastopol, forming final defensive lines. By April 14, Sevastopol is designated as the evacuation and last stand point for remaining Axis forces as the Soviets close in from all directions. Light folds and marginal file holes, else very good. The Crimean Peninsula was isolated by previous Soviet advances in Ukraine. The Axis defenders were heavily outnumbered and lacked sufficient naval evacuation resources. This evacuation marked the complete loss of Crimea for the Axis powers, which had held it since 1941. This map visually depicts the collapse of Axis positions in Crimea under intense Soviet pressure.
