Description:

GEN. FRANZ HALDER'S MAP OF THE EASTERN FRONT, FEB. 10, 1942
Most important map from the personal files of German Gen. FRANZ HALDER (1884–1972), titled: 'Eastern Front from 19 December 1941 to mid-February 1942 – Situation as of 10 February 1942', drawn at 1:4,000,000 scale in India ink and colored pencil, on coated drafting paper, 13 in. x 21 in. This German Army situation map shows the entire Eastern Front during the winter of 1941–1942, specifically the front line on Feb. 10, 1942. It reflects the aftermath of Operation Barbarossa and the Soviet counteroffensives that followed the failed German attempt to capture Moscow and depicts the front from Leningrad in the north to Crimea and the Black Sea in the south. It covers key sectors of the Soviet-German front line during the winter stalemate and shows counter-attacks, along with major cities, geographical features, and fronts with related army groups. These include Army Group North, near Leningrad; Army Group Center facing Moscow; and Army Group South in the Ukraine and Crimea region. Soviet fronts include the Wolchow Front, Nordwest Front, West Front, Sudwest Front, Sud Front and Krim Front. Divisions and corps are numbered as well. At this point in the Russian Campaign, the German advance had stalled after the failed attempt to take Moscow in December 1941. Soviet counteroffensives had started in December 1941 and were ongoing, and the Leningrad front was still under siege. Central sector (Moscow region) shows heavy Soviet attacks and breakthroughs west of Moscow, and German forces were still deep into Ukraine. In Crimea, where the siege of Sevastopol was in progress. German defensive lines are under pressure, particularly from the Wolchow, Northwest, and West Fronts. This map visually captures the first major Soviet winter counteroffensive after the Wehrmacht's overreach in 1941.It reflects a turning point where the German army, overextended and under-equipped for winter, faced stiff Soviet resistance and counterattacks. The map is an operational-level snapshot used by Halder to track the front status during a critical phase of the war. This map is a rare and historically significant primary source, capturing the exact military situation on the Eastern Front on February 10, 1942, during one of the most pivotal phases of World War II. Some wrinkles and edge wear, else near fine condition.
