Description:

GEN. FRANZ HALDER'S MAP OF THE ADVANCE TO THE OUTSKIRTS OF MOSCOW
An important hand-drawn situation map from the personal files of German Gen. FRANZ HALDER (1884–1972) documenting the second day of Operation Typhoon, the German drive on Moscow commencing Oct. 2, 1941. The map was executed using india ink, blue ink (representing German forces) and red ink (indicating Soviet lines) on coated map paper, 1p. 4to. in size. The drawing is titled: 'Skizze 2 – der 19. u. 20.1[0].41.' ('Sketch 2 – 19–20 [October] 1941'), drawn on a scale of 1:50,000 with a 0–4 km bar at bottom. The map shows the battle west of Moscow during Operation Typhoon on those dates. Marginal notes include 'v. Ruza 18 km' on the left and 'n. Zvenigorod 15 km' on the right, and the Moskva River is drawn along the lower edge. The road and railroad net centers on Lokotnya (top-centre), Klokly (right), and the map includes Mikhailovskaya, Neverovo, Kolyubakovo, Osakovo, and Kryukovo, with fords and bridges also indicated. German Infantry Regiment 195 lies in the center with arrows driving east/north-east. Battalion notations (I., III., etc.) and times mark phases. Neighboring formations ‘78. J.D.' (south-west) and ‘87. J.D.' (north-west) are shown screening the flanks. Soviet positions are shown astride the road and near Lokotnya and Klokly. Hatched boxes mark strongpoints. This regimental/divisional situation map shows German infantry attempting to force the local river crossings and push along the Lokotnya–Klokly–Mikhailovskaya corridor toward Moscow. Adjacent divisions (78th, 87th) cover the shoulders while Soviet troops contest the road junctions and fords. The map captures the struggle along the approaches west of Moscow just after the fall of Vyazma—where German units tried to crack the Ruza–Zvenigorod line. Small crossings are shown to govern the tempo more than open-field maneuvers, with Soviet counter-moves at specific villages - all details generally ignored in operational maps made long after the battle has concluded.
