GEN. FRANZ HALDER'S MAP OF I.D. 292 AND THE START OF 'TYPHOON'
Important hand-drawn situation map from the personal files of German Gen. FRANZ HALDER (1884–1972) depicting Halder's plan of attack for the 292nd Infantry Division on the opening day of Operation Typhoon (2 October 1941). The map was executed using india ink, along with blue ink representing German lines, on coated map paper, 1p. 4to. in size. The drawing is titled: 'Skizze 1 – Ausgangslage und Absicht der 292. I.D. fur den Angriff am 2.10.41' ('Sketch 1 – Initial situation and intent of the 292nd Infantry Division for the attack on 2 Oct 1941'), drawn with a 0–10 km bar at bottom. This simple hand-drawn war-date map depicts the region west of Yukhnov, a wooded, marshy belt with small villages and marginal roads. Margin notes point towards 'von Roslawl' (from Roslavl) at lower left and 'n. Yukhnow' (toward Yukhnov) at lower right. Terrain symbols show boggy patches and woods, Gusarki, small towns and hamlets, and Boldino and Basputkan as deeper objectives. The division deploys on a broad front with parallel thrusts. Unit labels (e.g., 339, 175) mark the regiments assigned to each axis; I.R. 195 sits to the rear as reserve near Novo Mi./Leqtyshino. Neighbor formations are annotated: 78. I.D. to the south-west (by Gusarki) and 267. I.D. along the southern boundary; Roman numerals XX. and VII. at the margins indicate corps sectors. This is the plan-of-attack for the 292nd Infantry Division on the opening day of Operation Typhoon (2 October 1941). The division intends to break out, push north-east on multiple, closely spaced axes, seize a chain of hamlets and crossings, and continue toward the road net leading to Yukhnov—with I.R. 195 held in reserve and neighboring 78th and 267th Infantry Divisions guarding the flanks. This is a contemporaneous order capturing how one division in Army Group Centre arranged its initial assault as the Moscow offensive began. The emphasis on marsh patches and narrow tracks explains why certain tiny villages (e.g., Vederniki, Solsha) became operational hinges despite their size. These hand-drawn staff sketches were used as working aids, and not intended to be polished maps. Surviving examples show what commanders actually intended before contact with the enemy might alter plans. This is an original German attack-intent map for 292nd Infantry Division at the start of Operation Typhoon and is invaluable for reconstructing the campaign's opening moves.
