Description:

GEN. DAVID M. GREGG AND STAFF DECIDE: "TO LIVE A QUIET LIFE WHILST WE CAN "
War-date Union officer's letter, 6pp. 8vo., written by Lt. Thomas J. Gregg, Co. F, 6th Pa. Cavalry (Rush's Lancers) as aide de camp on the staff of his brother Brig. Gen. David Mc. Gregg, "Head Quart 2nd C. C., near Bealton, Va.", Nov. 12, 1863, to his sister. In part: "…Dave...started out this morning for Fayetteville about four miles from here. I was there night before last with orders and stopped for a few minutes to see Mrs. Newhouse & daughter…her father and two brothers are in the Confederate Army. They have been very kind to us and are always glad to see us. An order has been issued forbidding officers and men from visiting houses. Lieut Arron and myself do just as we please…Dave had no idea when Harry will be exchanged…this Div. has had nothing more to do…than to make long marches. You must not be so severe in your charges against Maj. McCabe. He is doing every thing he can for Harry [brother Capt. Henry B. Gregg, 13th Penn. Cav. captured Sulphur Springs, Va., Oct 12, 1863] he has nothing to do with Harry's horse as he is in charge of Mr. Barney one of Dave's old staff officers. Everything is desolate about here and we have concluded to live a quiet life whilst we can…". Very good.
