GEN. ALFRED T. TORBERT AND STAFF PHOTO BY BRADY, 1864
ALFRED T. TORBERT (1833 – 1880) Career Army officer, a Union brigadier general commanding both infantry and cavalry forces. Torbert commanded his New Jersey brigade in the campaigns leading to the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Battle of Chancellorsville, and the Battle of Gettysburg. He then served as chief of the Cavalry for the Army of the Shenandoah and led the cavalry at important battles such as the Battle of Third Winchester and the Battle of Cedar Creek. Rare, original Brady photograph, 8 x 6.5 in. (sight), shows Torbert with his staff seated with on a porch at Light House Point, Va. in July, 1864. Mathew Brady is credited on the mount. Slightly faded, with some staining not greatly detracting at lower right. Matted and framed, sold with the original handwritten desriptive wrapper bearing two contemporary revenue stamps.
