Lot 14
14. HORATIO GATES (1728-1806) American Revolution Major General who with Arnold forced Burgoyne's surrender at Saratoga, he was later examined by Congress for his disastrous defeat at Camden. A.L.S., 1p. 4to., New York, Jan. 11, 1796 to James Womsley in Virginia with a nice reference to the Edmund Randolph bribery scandal. Gates writes in part: "...I was well acquainted with some of his intimate friends in Yorkshire, he possess so little time in New York that I could never find him sufficiently disengaged to dine at Rose Hill though I did all in my power to induce it; we frequently met and once we dined together at a Club, which is held every Saturday near my house; I have been looking out for you and Mrs. Wormsley, as you said you should be on your way to Boston this fall. Present my compliments to Mrs. Wormsley, and say that I wish to hear her melodious voice at Rose Hill. I have read with attention Mr. Randolph's Pamphlet & form so able a defense, I am convinced he had most degrading and most undeserved treatment, & this I trust will be the sentiment of every impartial Judge..." Gates adds a short postscript: "when you see them present my compliment to all old friends, & neighbors; and particularly to the House of Washington." Tipped into a larger sheet to which has been affixed the address panel. Usual folds, small tear at left margin, otherwise very good condition. $750-1,000
