Description:

Forest-green wool serge garrison cap, 11 ½" x 4 ½", fitted with a bronzed U.S. Marine Corps "eagle, globe and anchor" badge at front left. The brown leather sweatband fitted to the interior is inscribed "Capt. M.B. Twining" in black ink, identifying the cap as the pre-World War II headgear of U.S.M.C. General MERRILL B. TWINING (1902-1996). The interior is lined with brown silk or rayon, with a plastic sweat shield protecting an indistinct maker's mark. Shows minor interior wear and soiling, else very good. Twining held the rank of captain from 1935 to 1939, during which time he served as an instructor with the Marine Officers' Basic School in Philadelphia and the Marine Corps Schools at Quantico. After joining the 1st Marine Division in 1941, he was promoted to lieutenant-colonel and in July of 1942 became the first U.S. Marine to sight the Japanese-held island of Guadalcanal during an observation flight. He was promoted to brigadier-general in 1950, major-general in 1952 and lieutenant-general in 1956, with his final promotion to four-star general being granted posthumously.
