366. (JAMES A. GARFIELD) WILLIAM W. ASTOR (1848 - 1919) British financier and journalist, great-grandson of John Jacob Astor. A.L.S. 1p. 4to., Munich, Aug. 24, 1883, to John G. Blaine who, at the time, was one of James A. Garfield's rival for the Republican presidential nomination. In part: "...I have recently been advised of the receipt at the United States Legation at Rome...a copy of your Eulogy upon the late President Garfield...It is very good of you to have so kindly remembered me...". Blaine's eulogy, entitled Life and Character of James A. Garfield, President of the United States, February 27, 1882, was received with distinguished acclaim around the world.
