Gardner", as Treasurer and Receiver General of Massachusetts, 1p. folio, Boston, Nov. 25, 1780, an order issued to "Constable or Collector" Timothy Hartshorn of Reading, formally instructing him to collect the sum of 8,511 pounds in taxes with very explicit instructions following as to how these taxes were to be levied. Hartshorn is further instructed that in the case of non-payment, the names of such overdue taxpayers are to be published and if taxes remain unpaid, their land is to be sold to pay the sums due.
