1041. ERLE STANLEY GARDNER (1889-1970) American mystery writer and lawyer, one of the most prolific authors, writing over 80 detective novels featuring the courtroom lawyer Perry Mason. Typed D.S. on his persona1 ranch letterhead, 1p. 4to., New York, Mar. 1, 1952, a letter attesting to his secretary [and future wife] Jean Bethell being an American citizen. He notes biographical details for himself and Bethell: "...I was born at Malden, Massachusetts, July 17, 1889...[I] am a duly constituted peace officer... being a deputy sheriff, having badge no. 279...I have known Agnes Jean Bethell...for more than thirty years. She has been in my employ as a secretary since 1921...I am making a trip to Mexico and she is planning to accompany me..." Signed by both Gardner and Bethell. Fine.
