Description:

GARDINER G. HUBBARD
(1822 - 1897) American lawyer, financier, and philanthropist, the first president of the National Geographic Society and one of the founders of and the first president of the Bell Telephone Company which later evolved into AT&T. One of his daughters also became the wife of Alexander Graham Bell. Scarce A.L.S., 2pp. 8vo., Washington, May 28 [n.y.], to Abram Hewitt (1822-1903), chairman of the Democratic National Committee, U.S. Congressman, and a mayor of New York City. In part: "...My wife sailed for Europe last week...and left me alone. I know of no greater trial that a person can suffer than separation from your wife & children where duty as well as intimation[?] does require the presence with them. It was my intention to give you a good mortgage...I did not want the present one put on record...". Some significant may burn, a few tiny marginal chips. Matted with a color image of what appears to be a board meeting, presumably with Hubbard present.
