Description:

CLARK GABLE (1901-1960) American film actor known for his portrayal of rough, romantic heroes, most notably in Gone With the Wind. Important typed D.S. signed "Clark Gable " twice at bottom, 2pp. legal folio, [Miami], Sep. 15, 1942, a legal document in which the family members of those killed in the crash of Carole Lombard's plane (the deceased being Lombard, her mother Elizabeth Peters and press agent Otto Winkler), agree to: "...forever settle any possible claims between them... " and fully release each of the three parties from any such future claim. File holes at top, rough top margin, with Gable's pen causing a tiny hole when he signed, else near fine. On January 6, 1942 Lombard and her party left Indianapolis, bound for Los Angeles. The Army plane made an unscheduled stop in Las Vegas and at 6:50 P.M. proceeded west. The pilot seemed unconcerned when he reported at 7:07 P.M. that he was slightly off course, about thirty-five miles west of Las Vegas. Eyewitnesses later reported that it was just about that time that the plane burst into flames. Some thought it happened just before the plane hit Olcott Mountain. Gable flew directly from Los Angeles, and breaking away from friends, he tried to scale the mountain, failed, and went back to his hotel, haggard, unshaven, weary. Some 14 hours after their start, climbers reached the wreckage. There they found the mangled and burned bodies of Lombard, the other three civilian passengers, the 15 Army flyers, and the crew of three. Gable was devastated, as was most of Hollywood, and it would be years before he would fully recover. $1,000-1,500
