Description:

G.I.-CAPTURED THIRD REICH STATE SERVICE FLAG
Very large "Reichsdienstflagge", or "state service flag", 82" x 156", of two-piece red cotton bunting construction, clamp-dyed with a stationary swastika within a white disk, with the arms of the swastika intersecting with the edge of the disk. A national eagle is placed in the upper left canton. The hoist features a sewn-in fiber rope, with a metal clip loosely tied to each end. A series of small metal eyelets has been sew to the top edge of the flag, indicating horizontal display at some point in its history. The top edge shows several additional sewn repairs, with some small holes scattered throughout, else very good. The flag is accompanied by a letter from the widow of Sgt. Andrew J. Romero of the 263 Infantry Regiment, attesting that he captured this flag while in Germany, although she cannot recall the town or exact circumstances under which the capture was made. A copy of Romero's discharge report is also present, attesting that he saw action in Normandy, Northern France, the Ardennes, the Rhineland and Central Europe.
