Description:

Wood ammunition case, 29" x 8" x 5", with hinged lid and metal clasps. A paper label within the lid indicates that the case was utilized to store and transport the "8,8 cm RPzBGr 4322" rocket fired by the German "Panzerschreck" anti-tank rocket launcher, with wood cutouts affixed to the lid indicating that two such rockets could be stored securely within. This label also indicates an issue date of June 1944. A second label within the lid states that the rockets are a new type introduced for the winter of 1944-45, capable of being used in temperatures as low as "25 degrees Celsius. The lid and sides all bear the address of a Mrs. L.J. Yeager of Altoona, Pennsylvania, with a return address on the lid indicating that it was mailed from New York by her husband, Lt. L.J. Yeager, a member of Company "B" of a unit which may be the 746th Tank Battalion, although the lettering is nearly illegible. Below the return address also appears a very faint stamp in German identifying the contents. The box shows much wear, soiling and paint spatters overall, and the rope carrying handle is missing but for a few fragments, else very good.
