Description:

Rare cane presented to Union soldier Sergeant Edwin R. Child, 57th Indiana Infantry Division. The black-painted cane, 35 in. long, bears a metal cap at the end and a metal handle at top, engraved on the perimeter with a floral design. The top of the knob is finely etched in cursive script: 'Presented by the members of the Sedgwick Post No. 8 G.A.R. to their Commander E.R. Childs'. The bottom end cap is worn from use, else fine condition. Edwin R. Child (incorrectly spelled 'Childs' on the cap) first enlisted as a private in April 1861 with Co. G, 6th Indiana Infantry, mustering out four months later. He then enlisted as a private and mustered into Co. C, 37th Indiana Infantry, in October 1861, and was subsequently promoted to sergeant. Three years later, Child reenlisted with the regiment and mustered out of service in July 1865. While with the division, Child was present at many battles, including Stones River, Chickamauga, Resaca, the Siege of Atlanta, and Kennesaw Mountain. Sold with dozens of pages of research.
