Description:

FYODOR CHALIAPIN
(1873 - 1938) Russian operatic bass of enormous resonance who performed with the Bolshoi Opera, at La Scala, and at the Metropolitan. Superb I.S.P. 6 1/4" x 8 1/4" sepia photograph, an in-costume chest up near profile pose as Don Basilio in Il Barbiere di Siviglia. Inscribed to baritone, Vittorio Trevisan, "Bartolo mio Carissimo." Interestingly, Trevisan often sang the role of Bartolo, but never opposite Chaliapin's Don Basilio. A light crease at left of image barely detracts, handsomely matted and framed.
