Description:

FRITZ SAUCKEL WEIMAR 'EHRENBURGER' DOCUMENT
FRITZ SAUCKEL (1894-1946) Nazi chief of slave labor recruitment who seized over five million workers and kept them under the vilest condition. Tried, convicted and hanged at Nuremberg. A beautifully decorated vellum document with intricate German calligraphy, 1p. 17.5 x 15 in., Weimar, August 26, 1933, issued by the Mayor and City Council of Weimar officially naming Sauckel an 'Ehrenburger' ('Honorary Citizen'). Mostly untranslated but in small part it reads: '...[This document] is supposed to be a sign of the city's connection with a man, who in never ending work and struggle, has joined the country of Thuringa, and unanimously behind the peoples chancellor and leader Adolf Hitler, he serves as a sign of appreciation of the leader and freedom movement...' At the conclusion are facsimile signatures of the mayor and police chief of Weimar. Decorated with patterned borders of red and white with the margins intricately laced on all sides. Housed within a 15.75 x 4.75 red and black leather document case. Around the center, in between gilded patterns, are the words 'Ehrenburgerbrief Der Stadt Weimar' ('Letter of Honor from the City of Weimar'). The bottom of the case is stamped the maker 'Ordorfer Weimar', while the top bears a depiction of the Weimar coat of arms. Moderate wear and few chips to the case, the document is very fine. Also accompanying the document is a presentation medallion, roughly 2.5 in. diameter, in the shape of a gold swastika, also awarded to Sauckel by the city of Weimar, housed within an original case. SOLD WITH: A Third Reich Heer officer's dagger from Sauckel's home, 10 in. blade, 14.5 in. overall, with an orange celluloid-covered wood grip, wire taught, and capped by a circular pommel with oak leaf motifs. The cross guard depicts a national eagle with spread wings, with scrollwork at the ends of the quillions. The detail on the fitting remains very good. The nickel-finish blade bears the maker's mark of Alcosa company of Solingen, and the blade shows only the most minor running marks near the tip. The metal scabbard is fully pebbled, with an oak leaf pattern on the hanger bands. It is straight and bears no dents, dings, or other damage. From a collection of Sauckel-related items recovered from his residence after the war, and consigned to us by the estate of a four-star American general who participated in the liberation of Germany.
