FRIEDRICH WILHELM VON STEUBEN
(1730 - 1794) American Revolutionary general who reported to Washington at Valley Forge to undertake the training of troops, later led Continental Army forces at Monmouth and Yorktown. Good content war-related partly-printed D.S. "Steuben" as Inspector General, 1p. 13" x 8", [n.p.], in part: "...THIS certifies that the Bearer, Charles Foster of the late 2d Penna Regt. having been examined by me, is found to be unfit for any farther Duty, either in the Field or Garrison, having lost a leg in the Service...He is...recommended to his Excellency the Commander in Chief, for a Discharge...". Weak folds reinforced on verso, tiny hole affects one letter in text, still very good. The 2nd Pennsylvania Regiment was raised Oct. 12, 1775, under the command of Col. John Bull. It saw action in the battles of Brooklyn, Valcour Island, Trenton, the Brandywine, Germantown, Monmouth, and Springfield. The regiment was disbanded on Nov. 15, 1783.
