FRIEDRICH WILHELM VON STEUBEN
(1730 - 1794) American Revolutionary general who reported to Washington at Valley Forge to undertake the training of troops, later led Continental Army forces at Monmouth and Yorktown. STEUBEN LEASES THE LAND AT HIS NEW YORK FARM Good content manuscript D.S. "Steuben", 4pp. legal folio, [New York], Mar. 3, 1787, an indenture between "Frederick William Baron Steuben" and "John Conradt Kimmel" in which Steuben rents lands at his farm "Louvre" in Manhattan: "...bounded on the East by the East River on the West by the High Road leading to Kings Bridge...excepting the enclosed Garden and adjoining Mansion house..." with other clauses concerning hay and fruit to be made available to Steuben, rights of access, etc. Signed on the final page. Small, early paper "patch" on last page affects nothing, else very good. With the war over, Steuben resigned from service and first settled at this residence with his longtime companion, William North, for whom he created a special room. In New York, he became a prominent figure and elder in the German Reformed Church. From 1785 until his death, in 1794, he served as president of the German Society of the City of New York, a charitable society founded in 1784 to assist German immigrants.
