Description:

FRIEDRICH-WERNER GRAF VON DER SCHULENBURG
(1875 - 1944) German diplomat who served as the last German ambassador to the Soviet Union before Operation Barbarossa. He turned against the main Nazi Party and joined the conspiracy against Hitler. After the failed July 20 bomb plot, Schulenburg was accused of being a co-conspirator and eventually executed. Rare, early A.L.S. 'Friedrich Werner', 12pp. 8vo. in pencil, Monceau an der Oise, Aug. 29th, 1914, a letter to his mother Margarete in Braunschweig with fine World War I battle content. In very small part: '... On the 23rd and 24th we took part in the great battle, the official: Battle of Namur. It was very interesting: Everything, infantry and artillery went wild and nothing withstood our shrapnel and grenade fire. Our Guard Infantry was great, but only when we intervened they could really move forward. The French ran in the end like hares and only here on the Oise did they hold their own again...Today the cannon thunder continues...' Very good. Sold with original feldpost envelope, signed 'Oblt. Gf. Schulenburg'
