Description:

(1893 - 1975) Wehrmacht General and recipient of the Knight's Cross, commanded the 262nd Infantry Division on the Eastern Front from 1942 to 1943, later served at the Commandant of Brussels, Belgium. A.L.S. in German on the verso of a fold-out P.O.W. envelope, 6 x 14.25 in., October 4, 1947, a heartfelt letter sent during his post-war captivity to Major Fred Bieri of the International Red Cross, weeks before his release. In part: 'First the news that I have to be ready to move by October 9, together with 12 other Generals. We are all 13 of us 'disabled', me because of my heart troubles. Presumably, a hospital ship leaves for Germany on October 10. I can't really be happy unless I am in Herford with my wife. Today I would like to say 'good bye' to you and to thank you again and again for your efforts and well qualified help...I may write to you again from home, may I not?...' Signed at the conclusion. File holes, else fine. Sold with a translation.
