Description:

(1894-1980) German staff officer who in 1937 was the military adjutant to Adolf Hitler. Excellent content T.L.S. 'Hossbach', 2pp. 4to., Gottingen, Mar. 26, 1969, to Dr. Charles B. Burdick. Hossbach thanks Burdick for his previous correspondence, and goes on to state that he is reluctant to share any information about events that took place thirty years ago, as such memories are never fully accurate. He then proceeds to respond to three questions Burdick has posed to him. In part: '...Hitler told me repeatedly in private on January 25th and 26th, 1938... that [Werner von] Blomberg's successor should again be a general. Hitler gave up this point of view and already on the next day shared with Gen. [Wilhelm] Keitel his decision to assume the supreme command himself, this fundamental, sudden change of heart is without a doubt to be explained by Blomberg's advice...' Hossbach attributes this sudden change of heart to Hitler's erratic nature. Hossbach continues: '...According to Gen. Jodl's diary entry from January 27th, 1938... Hitler said the following to Gen. Keitel: 'I want to have a new adjutant who will be my and your confidant but not a confidant of other souls...' Hossbach is not aware of Hitler's reasoning for choosing Rudolf Schmundt. For the final question, Hossbach refers Burdick to his book: 'The Development of the Supreme Command of the Army in Brandenburg, Prussia and in the German Reich 1655-1945'. Signed at the conclusion in black ink, with several ink emendations throughout the letter. Folds, else fine.
