Description:

(1911 – 2010) German resistance member, a participant in the anti-Nazi opposition group the Kreisau Circle, with her husband, Helmuth James von Moltke. During World War II, her husband acted to subvert German human-rights abuses of people in territories occupied by Germany and became a founding member of the Kreisau Circle, whose members opposed the Nazis. The Nazi government executed her husband for treason, he having discussed with the Kreisau Circle group the prospects for a Germany based on moral and democratic principles that could develop after Hitler. Lot of two signed items includes a T.L.S., 1p. 4to., Berlin, Dec. 7, 1959 to a researcher. In part: "...I enclose the photograph. It is made in court during the trial...On 23rd January 1945 10 people were executed. Of these ten 8 were beheaded and 2 were hanged (none were shot)...From the attitude toward my husband I should say that he and his friend Haubach were hanged...our friend the prison chaplain...says in his little book...my husband was hanged..." Also present is a 9 x 7 in. photo of HELMUTH VON MOLTKE while on trial. On the verso, Freya von Moltke describes in German the image and her husband being sentenced to death because of "his position against National Socialism", also noting the date of his death. She also notes that he wrote to his sons: "...I fought my entire life against the narrow mindset and the brutality, the arrogance and disrespect of others, the intolerance...which is within the Germans and which is expressed through the National Socialist state..." Photo bears file holes along one edge, else fine. Two pieces.

Shipments are sent via USPS Priority, USPS International Priority, FedEx and DHL (for most overseas shipments) or FedEx Ground at the auctioneer's option, signature is always required, unless other arrangements are made. Handling and shipping charges will be added to the invoice in one entry. Buyers should be aware that large, framed, fragile or odd shaped items can incur substantial shipping and packing charges. International shipments are invoiced by DIMENSIONAL weight, not the item weight. Please contact us for an estimate before bidding NOTE: Large, heavy or bulky items may not be shipped by the auctioneer - arrangements for shipping of these items via a third-party shipper may be arranged through the auction house. Customers who supply their own courier account number will still be charged a handling fee. Please allow 2-3 weeks for shipments after receipt of payment due to the high volume of packages being shipped.
