Description:

FRENCH WORLD WAR II MORTAR (DEACTIVATED)
An original, deactivated French Brandt model of 1937 light mortar, designed to replace rifle grenades in infantry platoons and used during World War II. Complete and stamped ‘L. Gr. Mle 37 No. 14097'. Bears a bit of paint loss, otherwise near fine condition. Accompanied by a custom wood shipping case with indentations within to support the mortar, and with the return address in indelible pencil: ‘Cpl Denzil G. Clark 37190511 Co. A 59th Inf Regt. A.P.O. 408…', who sends the relic to ‘Mrs. Charles Clark, Fonda Iowa'. The 159th was attached to the 106th Infantry Division in early 1944 and served in Northern France, Rhineland and Ardennes-Alsace - no doubt where Clark obtained this fine relic. The division then moved back to Germany on April 25, 1945, where, for the remainder of its stay in Europe, the 106th handled POW enclosures and engaged in occupational duties. A fantastic relic!
