FRENCH PROPAGANDA POSTERS
Excellent pair of original French World War II propaganda poster. Includes: Pre-Vichy poster, 23" x 30 1/4", featuring a monochrome photograph of a French Navy lookout keeping watch over a convoy, within a red border. The title "Il Veille..." ("''He is Watching...") appears at the top, with the exhortation "Souscrive"("Subscribe") at bottom, encouraging French citizens to purchase subscriptions to fund the Navy. The publisher''s name "Creation Tahon" appears at bottom left, with the printer''s name and location "Imp. Schuster-Paris" at bottom right. The poster is mounted on a vintage linen backing with some separation, and shows an approx. 1" sq. area of paper loss above "Souscrive", else very good. WITH: Free French poster, 20" x 29 1/2", featuring crossed French tricolor flags at the top, and with a border showing the French colors. The piece reprints a message in French from Free French leader Gen. Charles de Gaulle from his headquarters in London, entitled "To All Frenchmen", in part: "France has lost a battle! But France has not lost the war! A makeshift Government may have capitulated, giving way to panic, forgetting honour, delivering their country into slavery. Yet nothing is lost! Nothing is lost because this war is a world war. In the free universe immense forces have not yet been brought into play. Some day those forces will crush the enemy. On that day France must be present at the Victory. She will then regain her liberty and her greatness... Our country is in danger of death. Let us fight to save it. Long Live France!" De Gaulle''s large facsimile signature appears at the conclusion. An English translation appears at lower left. A small paper label has been applied to the bottom edge bearing the New York address of the France Forever organization, a short-lived group of French Americans who refused to accept the armistice with Germany. No other printing information is present. Evenly toned, with slight chips and tears to the edges, else very good. Two pieces.
