Description:

Collection of approx. 30 documents, all related to "L'Homme De Confiance", or ombudsman, responsible for fielding the complaints and requests of French prisoners of war held at Stalag XVII-B near Krems, Austria, most circa 1943-1945. Of particular interest are four lists of prisoners, containing both names and prisoner numbers; Red Cross receipts for chocolate, tobacco, cheese and other food stuffs; the ombudsman's March 1945 newsletter, offering information on available rations, Red Cross packages, correspondence with prisoners' families, etc.; notices from the ombudsman, a Paul Fellman, to individual soldiers notifying them of correspondence with their families; notes from prisoners bemoaning the lack of food and clothing and requesting donations from outside the camp, including rations, medical supplies, American magazines, playing cards, clothing and more, many with attached responses form the ombudsman; and more. Many of these pieces feature the camp's postmark, with a further two, including the newsletter described above, bearing the camp's own stylized logo. Most pieces in French, not fully translated by us, certainly worthy of further research.
