Description:

FRENCH NEWSPAPER REPORTS OF THE RESCUE OF MUSSOLINI BY OTTO SKORZENYGood set of three of historic World War II newspapers, includes the Sep. 13 and 14, 1943 editions of the French collaborationist newspaper "Le Petit Parisien", both containing breathless reports on the Gran Sasso raid, in which Italian dictator Benito Mussolini was rescued from captivity at a mountain resort by SS commandos and Luftwaffe paratroopers under the command of SS captain Otto Skorzeny. The Sep. 13 edition, 4pp. folio, bears the large headline "The Duce is Released by German Paratroopers!", followed by a short press release from Hitler's headquarters, briefly announcing the success of the raid. The Sep. 14 edition, 2pp. folio, is headlined: "It is in a mountain range almost inaccessible that SS and German paratroopers found and delivered the captive Mussolini", with a much longer and more detailed account of the raid, mentioning Skorzeny by rank but not by name. Also present is yet a third newspaper, the Sep. 14, 1943 edition of "Paris-soir", 2pp. folio, utilizing the same headline as the Sep. 13 edition described above, accompanied by the German press release and a file photo of Mussolini and Hitler. These two later editions each show a 4" vertical tear at upper right, with some paper loss and archival tape repairs to the "Le Petit Parisien" edition, else very good. Three pieces.
