Description:

FRENCH COAST PHOTO BOOK USED IN D-DAY LANDINGS
An important relic of the D-Day landings, a 'concertina-style' beach silhouette books containing a series of connected photographs showing the Normandy beaches, typically used by landing craft crews to help them identify landmarks, so that they could ensure they delivered the troops on board to the correct location. The booklet is comprised of 30 11 1/2" x 8" plates, all connected, all but two showing the French coastline in consecutive images from La Madaleine to Hameau du Nord. Within this coastline lay UTAH BEACH, site of one of the major American landings. Each image was taken from one-quarter to one-half mile offshore and important shore structures are identified, such as casemates, substantial houses, strongpoints gaps in seawalls, etc. The photos are contained within a 12" x 9" green leatherette folder marked: "BOOKLET M. FRANCE. NORTH COAST" with various other notes and publication date of February, 1944. The presentation was prepared by the little-recognized Inter-Services Topographical Department (ISTD) at Oxford. This research group sifted through mountains of data to present the best invasion location alternatives to allied planners. This photo book was one of the group's most important contributions. From the estate of a high-ranking U.S. Army officer said to have been involved in the invasion.
