Description:

FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR: HENRY BOUQUET Manuscript account book, 52 leaves, folio, [various places], 1761 to 1764 (with additional accounts dating between 1771 and 1774) being the accounts for members of Colonel Henry Bouquet's (1719-1765) regiment which came to the relief of the besieged Fort Pitt on August 5 to 6, 1763. The book includes accounts for most of the commissioned officers of the regiment including Bouquet, Captain Lieutenant Joseph Phillips, Lieut. Stair. Cambell Carre, Lieut. William Potts, Lieut. James Ralfe, Capt. Richard Mather, Lieut. Townsend Guy, Lieut. James Dow, Lieut. Robert Steward, Lieut. Edward Jenkins, Lt. William Leslye, Lieut. George McDougal, Lieut. Francis Gordon, Lieut. Francis Phister, Lieut. John Haldiman, Lieut. James McDonald, Lieut. George Denler, Lieut John Jarrett, Ensign Lewis Victor Duplelsis, Ensign John Christie, Ensign William Holmes, Surgeon James Stevenson, Mate Abraham Vanhuilst. Accounts also exist for complete companies including "Captain Schl?ssers Company ", as well as Gordon's, Etherington's, and Cochran's. Following the company accounts we find a series of small accounts all against the "General Account of the Estate of H [enry]. B [ouquet]" dating between 1771 and 1774. Claimants included Joseph Galloway, Joseph Allen, Richard Willing, Dr. Phineas Bond and others. The account book reveals the tangled web of personal obligations between officers of the regiment. Because of a severe lack of hard currency in the colonies, the officers were forced to borrow funds to pay day to day expenses for themselves and their men. Even Surgeon James Stevenson had to pay out of his own pocket for such services as "...Carriage of a Box from Bedford to Fort Pitt [Nov 15, 1761]" and "To Cash paid by Capt. Orry for taking care of the sick at Bedford [July 30, 1762]" Henry Bouquet was a Swiss-born professional soldier who served for various European states including Sardinia and The Netherlands. He served as second in command under General John Forbes in the 1758 expedition to take Fort Duquense from the French. Because Forbes was sick much of the time, Bouquet was de facto commander of the expedition. The captured French fort was renamed Fort Pitt. Two years later he would command another expedition, this time to relieve Fort Pitt, besieged by the Indians sympathetic to Pontiac's Rebellion. For his efforts, Bouquet was promoted to General and was sent to Florida where he died of yellow fever soon after his arrival. Bound pages have been cleanly removed from the original tooled leather binding, pages bear toning and moderate soling, margins somewhat chipped with some small losses, otherwise good to very good condition. $2,000-3,000
