Description:

FRENCH 2ND CUIRASSIER REGIMENT BANNER
The 2nd Cuirassier Regiment was an armored unit of the French Army, which originated as a cavalry and then a cuirassier regiment. It was descended from the regiment Cardinal-Duc, which is at the top of the list of twelve cavalry regiments created by the same royal ordnance of 16 May 1635 - this made the 2nd Cuirassier Regiment the oldest surviving cavalry regiment in the French Army, until its disbandment in 1991. A beautiful, richly-embroidered ca. 1945 two-sided standard of the 2nd Cuirassiers, 15 x 15 in. overall. The slightly faded multi-piece banner resembles the blue, white and red French national flag and is heavily embroidered in gold bullion. One side bears the name of the regiment with its wreath-enwrapped number in each corner. The reverse lists its battle honors, namely for Marengo 1800, Austerlitz 1805, La Moskova 1812, Vauchamps 1814, l'Ourcq 1914, L'Avre 1918, Marseille 1944, and Ulm 1945, with the same insignia in the corners. Three sides of the standard are fringed in gold bullion, the fourth side bears a pole pocket, well used and had-reinforced. This piece was typically used as a parade standard. One light damp stain at bottom on one side, else very good and a beautiful piece to display.
