Description:

740. JOHN C. FREMONT (1813-1890) "The Pathfinder", explorer of the western frontier and Union army major general until sacked by Lincoln for his efforts to garner more power. Fine A.L.S. "J.C. Fremont," 1p, 8vo, New York, June 6, 1857. After being defeated the previous November as the Republican candidate for President of the United States, Fremont decided to give up his residence in New York City and move back to California, where he became a prominent, respectable and prosperous gold mine owner. Writing to the noted Philadelphia publisher George W. Child, writes: "Before breaking up my establishment here, which will be next week, I should like to have some conversation with Mr. Hamilton. Can you tell me if he is likely to be here during the present week?". Soundly beaten in the election of 1856 by James Buchanan, Fremont would again accept the nomination for President in May 1864, and would be beaten that time by Abraham Lincoln. $400-500
