Description:

"FREEDOM OF THE PRESS" IS DENIED AN ANTI-LINCOLN, PRO-SOUTHERN REPORTER
Extraordinary Union Army General Order No. 19 denying a Northern reporter his due "freedom of the press". The order, a manuscript Document., 2pp. 4to., Helena, Ark., Mar. 24, 1863, is signed by A.A.A.G. James O. Pierce on behalf of Brig. Gen. Benjamin Prentiss, with this particular copy directed to the adjutant General of the State of Wisconsin. Prentiss orders, in part: "...M. M. Pomeroy, a citizen of Wisconsin, having being found within the lines of the Army...as correspondent of the 'La Crosse Democrat'...and there being ample evidence in the possession of the General Commanding, that he has been communicating to and publishing in said paper, articles containing disloyal sentiments, and filled with remarks calculated to discourage and demoralize the army, and that he believes the war...to be 'a murderous crusade for cotton and niggers', and the loyal soldiers...to be a band of thieves and robbers, said M. M. Pomeroy is hereby ordered to leave the lines of this army immediately and not to return under penalty of arrest as a spy...". Very good. MARCUS MILLS "BRICK" POMEROY (1833-1896) founded the LaCrosse Democrat in 1860. He soon gained national notoriety for his vicious anti-Lincoln editorials and pronouncements. Although Pomeroy's vivid and vindictive journalism gave the Democrat a large circulation during the early years of the war, his Copperheadism forced it into virtual failure by 1865.
