FREED SLAVE IS CONVICTED OF MURDER
Union printed General Order No. 5, Headquarters, Beaufort, SC, Aug. 15, 1862, 3pp. 8vo., indicating: "Moses, a colored man, was convicted of murder of a negro named Juneby a mortal blow with a club and was sentenced to ten years confinement...". The same general order shows a man charged with stealing timber from a confiscated plantation. Also present is General Order No. 6, 2pp. 8vo., Beaufort, July 15, 1863, in which regulations for the establishment and operation of Plantation Commissions are set forth. These commissions were organized to adjudicate crimes committed on plantations vs. having the cases heard in military courts. Both oredrs as signed in type by Gen. RUFUS SAXTON, Military Governor.
