Description:

FREDERICK W. VON EGLOFFSTEIN
(1824 – 1885) German-born brevet brigadier general, explorer, and mapmaker, landscape artist and engraver. He organized what became the 103rd New York Volunteer Infantry, of which he was elected colonel. His American military career was quickly ended by his serious wounding in late April 1862, in North Carolina, although he did not resign his commission until late 1863. He was granted a brevet commission as a brigadier general in 1865. Great content war-date A.L.S., 3pp. 4to., New Bern, NC, Apr. 6, 1862, writing to HENRY A. SAND, who would be killed at the Battle of Antietam while rallying his troops. In part: ‘…You are hereby appointed commandant of the military post at Evans Mill. Your orders are to hold that position at all hazard and to prevent the destruction of the lumber and flower mill by the enemy. Should you need reinforcement report at once to this camp by means of mounted orderlies at your disposal…Should anything of importance be brought to your office, report to the commander of this camp. The object of this expedition being to ascertain the position and number of the enemy within a circle of thirty miles in the direction of Beaufort and Trenton. I call your attention to the necessity to procure as many horses in the county of the enemy as you can capture to pursue the cavalry scouts of the rebels effectually. Try and make prisoner dead or alive of a certain Captain Malette and Captain Evans…' Von Egloffstein provides a hand-drawn map of the area with great accuracy. Some show through with stains and small tears, otherwise fine. The Battle of New Bern had taken place only a few weeks earlier. Major Peter Mallett was placed in charge of organizing, training, and deploying the men conscripted in North Carolina soon after Jefferson Davis signed the conscription act in April 1862.
