FREDERICK ROBERTS, 1ST EARL ROBERTS
(1832 - 1914) British general, served in the Indian Rebellion, the Expedition to Abyssinia and the Second Anglo-Afghan War before leading British forces to success in the Second Boer War. Good association A.L.S. 'Roberts' on Windsor Castle letterhead, 3pp. 8vo., London, November 15, 1907, to John Solano regarding his invention. In part: '...I am much impressed by the practical usefulness of your war target and hope soon to see it very generally adopted...I can conceive the target being very valuable as a means of teaching judging distances...I will gladly give you a letter of introduction to the commandant Colonel Egerton. The journal of the Society of Miniature Rifle Clubs is open to you if you would like...' Lightly creased, else fine condition. Accompanied by a hand addressed envelope with an inscription on the verso in a different hand that reads: 'Written from Windsor Castle when Lord Roberts was attached to the Suite of H.M. William II of Germany.' After his retirement from the army, Roberts became an advocate for improved education and training for British soldiers. He was also instrumental in founding the 'National Smallbore Rifle Association' (later merged with another organization to form the Society of Miniature Rifle Clubs) which promoted compulsory military and firearms training for civilians.
