Description:

FREDERICK II
(1740 - 1786) "Frederick the Great", King of Prussia, a brilliant military campaigner who, in a series of diplomatic stratagems and wars against Austria and other powers, greatly enlarged Prussia's territories and made Prussia the foremost military power in Europe. Exceptional manuscript L.S. 1p. 4to., Potsdam, Feb. 26, 1748 in German to a Prussian general at the close of the War of Austrian Succession, in part: "...When the Russian General Lieven enters Breslau, as discussed in the letter of the 21st, he may raise money on his credit line, so long as he uses it himself for his own personal expenses there...". Though Russia had sided with Austria during the war, she was unable to enter the conflict until 1748 due to an ongoing war with Sweden. On Feb. 26, 1748, the day of this letter, both Prussia and Russia were amassing troops in and around Breslau. In what can only be construed as a bizarre olive branch, Frederick allows the Russian general to raise money on a credit line to "wine and dine", but not for engagement of hostilities! Evidently this gesture worked: the Provisional Peace of Breslau was signed four months later between Frederick and Maria Theresa. A few foxed spots at margin, otherwise very good condition.
