FREDERICK DOUGLASS'' ICONIC NEWSPAPER, "THE NORTH STAR"
DOUGLASS REPORTS ON THE FIRST WOMEN''S RIGHTS CONVENTION An unbelieveably rare complete issue of ex-slave abolitionist and orator Frederick Douglass'' newspaper, "The North Star". This paper, Vol. I No. 29, was printed in Rochester on July 14, 1848 and is four pages, 18" x 22". It is a complete issue, folded once as was normal. Douglass is listed on the masthead as editor, beside the motto of the paper: "RIGHT IS OF NO SEX - TRUTH IS OF NO COLOR GOD IS THE FATHER OF US ALL, AND ALL WE ARE BRETHREN". This example was the personal copy of Isaac and Amy Post, Quaker friends of Douglass'' who hid fugitive slaves along the Underground Railroad. Page two contains a great deal of anti-slavery news and meeting schedules, but also notes that a women''s rights convention would convene in Seneca Falls on July 19-20 to be addressed by Lucretia Mott. This "Seneca Falls Convention" was the first women''s rights convention, which advertised itself as "a convention to discuss the social, civil, and religious condition and rights of woman". Very good condition. Upon Douglass''s return to America following a self-imposed exile in England, he decided to publish his own anti-slavery newspaper, choosing Rochester instead of Boston or New York City in order not to interfere with the local circulation of William Lloyd Garrison''s Liberator or the National Anti-Slavery Standard. In a letter to his friend Amy Post, Douglass wrote: "I have finally decided on publishing the North Star in Rochester and to make that city my future home." Douglass began his weekly newspaper on December 2, 1847 , with William Cooper Nell as publisher, and John Dick as printer. Among the early patrons of the North Star was abolitionist and wealthy philanthropist, Gerrit Smith.
In his newspaper, Douglass wrote about the many local and state-wide anti-slavery meetings and conventions. He also included reports from abolitionist societies, important speeches, resolutions adopted, and the size and enthusiasm of the audiences. Like other newspapers, the North Star contained articles lifted from other publications around the nation, and articles written by a number of correspondents as well. Advertisements contain the various publications printed and sold by the North Star Press, including Douglass''s own speeches and books. This newspaper is virtually unobtainable.
