FRED HAMPTON ASSASSINATION CRIME SCENE PHOTOS
Before dawn on December 4, 1969 two dozen Chicago Police officers advanced on a house where 9 members of the Black Panther Party occupied a ground-floor apartment, armed with 19 guns and 1000 rounds of ammunition. There are numerous versions of what came next, but when the gunfire stopped two prominent Panthers – Fred Hampton, 21, and Mark Clark, 22 – lay dead. The Panthers'' clubhouse was riddled with holes. It was determined that Police fired some 99 rounds while the Panthers fired none.
The Chicago Police maintained they were justified. The Panthers interpreted the raid as just a pretext by which Police could kill Hampton, who was seen as a growing threat by the F.B.I. At the time he was struck by rifle fire that poured through the walls, Hampton was asleep – having been drugged by a Police operative. Upon finding him wounded but alive, witness testimony stated that Officers fired two rounds into his head at point blank range. Cook County State Attorney Edward Hanrahan was indicted along with 17 of his subordinates however each was cleared of all criminal charges. These photographs were shot in the immediate aftermath of the Panthers Raid. The true gravity of this tragic event only fully translate in color, and these are the only known color images. Condition is excellent. Each measures 5" x 7".
