FRANZ VON RINTELIN
(1878 � 1949) German Naval Intelligence officer, agitator, and espionage agent in the United States during World War I. His primary mission was to sabotage American ships carrying munitions and supplies to the Allies. Among von Rintelen's acts was an attempt to buy-up vast quantities of gunpowder to deny it to the Europeans Allies, hide pencil bombs in the holds of British ammunition ships, and negotiated with Victoriano Huerta for money to purchase weapons and arrange U-boat landings to provide support, while hoping to persuade Mexico to make war on the U.S. Lot of two A.L.Ss, each 1p. 8vo., Evelyn Gardens, [England], one dated Oct. 21, 1948, the other dated Nov. 10, 1948, legal or business letters sent to a "Child & Child" company regarding Rintelin's sub-tenants, signed at the conclusion in black ink. Fine.
