Description:

(1878 – 1949) German Naval Intelligence officer, agitator, and espionage agent in the United States during World War I. His primary mission was to sabotage American ships carrying munitions and supplies to the Allies. Among von Rintelen's acts was an attempt to buy-up vast quantities of gunpowder to deny it to the Europeans Allies, hide pencil bombs in the holds of British ammunition ships, and negotiated with Victoriano Huerta for money to purchase weapons and arrange U-boat landings to provide support, while hoping to persuade Mexico to make war on the U.S. His work was largely successful and probably included some part in the Black Tom explosion in 1916. He was finally arrested in flight and held in the U.S. until war's end. Large lot of approx. 125 A.L.S.s in von Rinelen's hand, almost all post-World War II from his residence in the U.K. to a "Dr. Poka Piven". The letters, the vast majority of which are signed "R" and in German, are untranslated but apparently concern business matters, particularly real estate in London. Should be seen, overall near fine.
