FRANZ VON PAPEN
(1879-1969) Chancellor of Germany and Vice Chancellor in Hitler's early years of power, von Papen was acused and later acquitted of war crimes. Good content T.L.S. as military to the German Embassy, 2pp. 4to., New York, Jan. 6, 1915 to William Conant of the U.S. Army & Navy Journal. Von Papen explains in detail the differences between a German Ersatz corps and a Reserve corps, specifically the additional training required of the Ersatz troops. He adds: "...Germany does not need as much time for the organization of Ersatz troops as England as the personel as well as the localities and the material...are much more abundant in Germany..." A few faults including some small marginal chips, a small hole in blank area, and a marginal pencil note. Von Papen's fortunes would soon change. Appointed 1913 as military attaché to the German embassy in Washington, von Papen was implicated in espionage activities that in 1915 led the U.S. government to request his recall. He subsequently served in Turkey during World War I and, after the war, entered politics.
