FRANZ VON PAPEN AUTOBIOGRAPHY FROM NUREMBERG
FRANZ VON PAPEN (1879-1969) Chancellor of Germany and Vice Chancellor in Hitler's early years of power, von Papen was accused and later acquitted of war crimes. Fine content A.D.S., 4pp. legal folio, Nuremberg, Oct. 10, 1945. While being held as a war criminal at Nuremberg, von Papen submits his autobiographical information to '...the Medical Officer in charge of the Prisoner-Internees' This is a very highly-detailed accounting of von Papen's life to date, including commentary on his parents and siblings, his upbringing, education. spouse, military service, government service, etc., all very well written in excellent English. He further describes his mission buying war materiel in the U.S., his military service in the Middle East, his role as chancellor and subsequent diplomatic service in Turkey. He returns to Germany on Aug. 2, 1944 to find his home burned to the ground and the remains thoroughly looted. He concludes complaining: '...after 6 months of prison...my nerves are sometimes nearing the breaking point - I feel dizzy and bad...We are kept in the dark now from 5 pm. - 14 hours a day...the guards have instructions to [shine] light into the cells...there is no possibility of sleeping...I want to face my trial with good nerves and in possibly good health...' Paper is evenly toned, else very good.
