FRANZ SIGEL
(1822 - 1899) Union brigadier general who repulsed the Confederates at Cheat Mountain and held that portion of West Virginia for the Union. He also served at Chattanooga and Chickamauga. Military content, war-date A.L.S., 1p. 8vo., Middletown, June 28, 1862, to a Col. Tracy, in full: ‘By a mutual understanding with Gen. [John C.]Fremont, Captain Otto was proposed to take command of 4-12 pound howitzers, now at Wardsville. If General Fremont has not given a written order to this effect I beg you, to do it and to send the small Elsworth guns to Wardsville.' He signs ‘F. Sigel' in black ink at the conclusion, adding his rank ‘M. Gen.' Shows original mailing folds and mounting remnants to the verso, else very good to fine. Sold with a period engraving of Sigel, with his facsimile signature beneath the image.
