Description:

FRANZ HALDER
(1884 -1972) One-time German chief of staff until transferred to the reserves by Hitler due to policy disputes. Suspected of plotting against Hitler's life in 1944, he was interned at Flossenburg until his rescue by the Allies. Pair of good content signed letters, includes: T.L.S., 1p. 4to., Aschau, June 14, 1966, to Dr. Charles B. Burdick. Halder discusses some of the conventions for choosing code names for major military operation, specifically "Operation Isabella", a hypothetical invasion of Spain and Portugal, which was named by the OKH (Supreme High Command of the Wehrmacht). In part: "...At first, the OKH named military plans and campaigns with different colors and later with personal names that were to some degree associated with the history of the people or geographical location where the action was to take place, e.g. Barbarossa as an illustration of a thought about the crusades, Marita as referring to a common name in the Balkans, Isabella referring to the great queen of Spain..." Halder does not know exactly who chose the name Isabella, but suggests that it might have been Gen. Alfred Jodl, and he suggests the Burdick ask Gen. Walter Warlimont for confirmation. In any case, Halder states, the name would have had to be approved by Hitler. Signed at the conclusion in blue ink. Folds, file holes at the left margin, else fine. WITH: T.L.S., 1p. 4to., Aschau, Jan. 6, 1971, Halder thanks Dr. Charles Burdick for writing a tribute for general HUBERT LANZ in honor of his 75th birthday. Halder praises Burdick as someone whose"...thorough search for truth... uncommon psychological sensitivity and... clear perception of the essential..." have enabled "... human understanding... [to] blaze a trail... over the years of war enmity..." Signed at the conclusion in black ink. Folds, else very good. Two pieces.
