Description:

FRANKLIN PIERCE
(1804 - 1869) Fourteenth President of the United States who initiated the Gadsden Purchase, opening up the Northwest for settlement. Fine association and scarce partly-printed D.S. as President, 1p. folio, Washington, Oct. 2, 1855, a naval appointment of Charles W. Pickering to serve as 'Commander in the Navy'. Signed by Pierce at conclusion, co-signed by Secretary of the Navy JAMES C. DOBBIN (1814-1857). Folds, with a small stain in a blank area at upper-left, else near fine, with an attractive vignette of Neptune and other gods, sailing ships, flags and cannon at bottom. Double-matted and set into an ornate black and brown wood frame. CHARLES W. PICKERING (1815-1888) is best known for being the captain of USS HOUSATONIC when it was sunk by the Confederate States Navy submarine, H. L. HUNLEY on Feb. 17, 1864. Pickering was born in New Hampshire and was a descendant of the aristocratic Pickering family of Massachusetts. His naval career began when he was warranted as a midshipman in 1822 at the age of six. The reason for his appointment at such a young age was probably to provide financial support to his mother following the death of his father.
