Description:

FRANKLIN PIERCE

Partly-printed D.S. 1p. folio, Washington, Feb. 9, 1854, a fine association, scarce military appointment countersigned by JEFFERSON DAVIS as Secretary of War. The appointment names future Union General George H. Gordon as "...First Lieutenant in the Regiment of Mounted Riflemen". Gordon (1823-1886), raised the 2nd Mass. Infty. Vols. and served under Banks in Shenandoah Valley. Appointed to Brigadier General in 1862, he subsequently led a regiment in the Army of the Potomac in the battles of Antietam and Gettysburg. Pierce's signature very bold, light wrinking and usual folds, handsomely framed with portraits of Pierce and Davis. Small loss at upper left not affecting text, else very good condition, not examined out of frame.
