Description:

FRANKLIN GARDNER
(1823-1873) Confederate major general who commanded a brigade at Shiloh and under Polk, captured while defending Port Hudson. Rare, fine content A.L.S. signed twice, 3pp. 4to., Camp Alexander, June 16, 1856, to noted officer HENRY E. MAYNADIER, then serving as Adjutant General at Fort Snelling. Gardner bitterly complains of his low rank within the camp, in part: ‘…Without desiring to complain, I feel it to be a duty that I owe to myself to make respectfully the following representations to the commanding officers of the Regiment. When my company (B) was designated to take post at Fort Snelling, I was placed in a position where I would command a Battalion of two Companies…subordinate to the Commander of the Post, and leaving me second in command…but the subsequent assignment of Bvt. Col. Smith to the command of that post, necessarily deprives me of the command of a Battalion…and brings me third in command and fifth in rank…lower than any Captain now present…I respectfully request that I may be placed in a position in accordance with my rank…'. Gardner adds on a separate page: ‘…The above letter was written previously to the receipt of instructions stopping the command destined for the Red River, but I deem it proper still to hand it in…'. On the verso, Maynadier crisply declines Gardner's request, stating: ‘…the original assignment of companies will not be altered until the receipt of frontier orders from the Adt. Genl…'. Two fold tears, a couple of tape repairs to verso, overall very good condition.
