Description:

FRANKLIN GARDNER AND SAMUEL B. MAXEY
Scarce pair of war-date endorsements penned on the verso of a partial document declaring that Major W. B. Holden of the 53rd Tenn. is unfit for duty. Holden signs the report, which on the verso bears an A.E.S. by SAMUEL BELL MAXEY as brigadier general approving and forwarding the application, with FRANKLIN GARDNER signing an endorsement as major general taking the same action. Additionally, the document bears an A.E.S. of I. R. BARRETT, Chief Surgeon of the 3rd District. The text of Maxey's endorsement is light but largely legible, otherwise very good. A rare pairing of generals' signatures.
